THREE RULES OF TIME MANAGEMENT
By Rod Alan Richardson
“It’s late… I know,” Johnny Bob says to Mrs. Bob as he crawls into bed. “Who’s the kid in our living room watching TV?”
“That would be your middle daughter!” Mrs. Bob expels.
“Oh, I thought she looked familiar,” says Johnny.
Business has a way of getting in the way of life; if you’re not careful, it can become your life and rob you of that which has real value—relationships and love.
I recalled noticing that my youngest daughter actually likes me; she’s a real daddy’s girl. My middle daughter hardly talks to me. I wondered why the contrast when I realized that I had a home office during my youngest daughters formative years and I was gone around the clock launching a startup during my middle daughters formative years.
My relationships with all my daughters have improved radically mainly because I’ve adopted some core rules for balance:
Rule 1: Be done when you’re done; be done by 6:30 pm every night
Rule 2: Dedicate Saturday to Family; leave work at work
Rule 3: Don’t work Sundays; you need the mental decompression and rest
My dad lives a rich and full life. I asked him how he does it and he said, “I never bring work home.” Good advice.
